During the early 21st century a trend began emerging allowing the implanting of various microchip based solutions to monitor health conditions of their hosts, or for use as security pass keys.

Minaturised microchip based sensors became more common place and could be used to monitor a variety of medical conditions. Some small system could be linked to implanted systems that could deliver minute doses of critical medicines. They weren’t initially widely used. Several employers were keen to use the monitors for drug and alcohol monitoring of staff, but a number of Christian government regulators moved against this kind of practice, fearing the antichrist and the coming of the end of days. These fears proved to be unfounded once the regulators were able to put in place appropriate measures for potential abuses, the protection of worker privacy etc.

The general public became more accepting of helpful medical implants over time, especially with the introduction of skin stick on medical monitors that became more sophisticated and concealable over time.

In the security access space, implants became popular to use with keyless entry systems for cars, doors, computers and the likes, so people could avoid remembering passwords, carrying keys or swipe cards.Early security implants were little RFID capsule implants put into the soft tissues next to the thumb.

While acting as an adequate replacement for general consumer security, a number of high profile crimes involved people being kidnapped & butchered for their implants to effect high value crimes.

To counter the vulnerability of these implants, many security systems also included additions of biometric data, from both the implant and from external sensors operating for the locks themselves. Comprehensive systems looked at fingerprint, retinal scans and eventually blood type and DNA scanners later in the century - making it harder, but not impossible for criminals.
