(FSpaceLynks) The Iriak Effect In the late 21st century, Terran researchers were trialing many jump drive experiments in the endeavour to push the frontier of knowledge further. The Klastovic station in close solar orbit was one of these facilities. It's mission was to study the phenomena of intersecting jump fields on material objects. The project was looking at the results of such phenomena in the hopes of reducing the catastrophic effects caused by such incidents. The project did provide some interesting results, but mainly resulted in the loss of various test objects into what was presumed to be jumpspace. The project was cancelled with the advent of interstellar breakout and the contact with the Vilani.Klastovic station was converted into a solar pumped laser station soon afterwards and it's data banks were stored at the Arcadian Scientific Institute on Mars. The research was largely forgotten apart from being textbook material for 2nd year Jump Drive Engineering students at the Institute. In 1109 imperial, a local Martian student in his 3rd year, a Damian Iriak took more than passing interest in the historic research station's findings. Using the more advanced computer technology of the day combined with generations of research by various cultures throughout the Empire, he discovered that something was dramatically wrong with the disappearance of the test objects.Damian continued his research well into post doctorate studies and managed to obtain funding to develop a more advanced research facility than the ancient Klastovic station had developed.By 1114 he had proven that the test objects thrown into jumpspace had been projected into a parrallel universe of some sorts. His research needed more funding to explore this phenomena, but the pressures of the Rebellion were to close down his facility. However his research did gain recognition amongst the scientific community, and was titled the Iriak Effect.Damian continued his research well into the turmoil of the Rebellion using private funds where he could attract some interest. After many years he discovered in his results a strange high order EM signature related to the Effect, not generated by his equipment, but coming from the link established with this 'parrallel' universe.Damian looked through all the records of jump drive failures or strange incidents looking for information concerning these radiations. He found many cases of such incidents relating to the disappearance of vessels, and a number relating to a particular classof vessel, the Anvil within the Solar system over most of interstellar history.Furthermore the most notable incident was a freak collision with a rogue asteroid in 2038 by a small prospecting ship. Damian followed this lead quite curious about an asteroid emitting such radiations, suspecting it had arrived through a freak connection with his 'parrallel' universe. Using observation records dating from the period, he used a small scout courier to follow it's course out into extrasolar space.By this stage the Virus had broken out and was afflicting most interstellar travel. Damian's craft was no exception, and failed at about the time he arrived at his destination. The Alien VesselWhat he found was no ordinary asteroid. It was a vessel made out of a strange alloy hull several hundred meters thick that had been warped by immense energies. Inside he found a vessel so erringly familiar to the human eye, with controls and facilities clearly designed for a human crew. What was most striking was that the controls were marked in English and that the ship had many personal items dating from an ancient Earth with Nations such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Communist China, Russia and other long forgotten names.Damian struggled with learning the secrets of this strange vessel. What shocked him the most was that it wasn't really from an parrallel universe, but from an alternate one, were even the laws of science seemed to run differently.Apparantly the crew of the vessel had abandoned it and blended into Terran society at the time seeking to hide their identity and escape out into interstellar space, and establish colonies in farflung places were they could live as their culture dictated.Damian was soon to find that he was not alone on this vessel. The virus onboard his on vessel was in the process of taking over this 'alien' human vessel. However it soon found it had some opposition. This ship, though dormant was already host to a sentient intellect, one neither virus in origin, or artificial in origin. A titanic struggle ensued between the virus and the ship's resident entity. During the battle of wills, the ship's systems were triggered and flung into the vast reaches of hyperspace and across the bridges between universes. Damian Iriak and the alien vessel were never to be seen again in human recorded history. The ColonistsHowever the descendants of that vessel - ASS Lumanarian still remembered their origins on a different Earth and the horror machines they fought in the wars before they were flung into this universe. During the era of the virus and the huge collapse, many colonies perished, but others survived. Very few now remember their origins beyond them being myths and legends. However every now and then an observatory catches strange EM emissions and the mysterious appearance from the Wilds of Anvil starships visiting their lost brethern throughout what was once called known space.
